Barney's Financial Roller-coaster

Good news for Barneys New York came last week when they announced sales had risen 7% for the month of October when compared to last year.  For the month of September the company posted a 9% loss when compared to the same time last year.  Unlike last year when retailers were slashing prices up to 75% off in early November this year retailers like Barneys New York are holding off on markdowns.  Barneys reports that the top performing stores  include their flagships in Chicago, New York, and Beverly Hills.

Fueled by re-inventing the fit of its jeans and producing a tailored look, Gap posted a 25% profit.  Its been a busy year at Gap, not only is it currently setting it sight on new Asian markets, but its collaborating left and right.  For the past few seasons Pierre Hardy has been the mastermind behind their designer shoes, aside from  Gap he creates footwear for Balenciaga and most recently Stella Mccartney created a collection for Gap Kids which sold out in many stores. Gap's third quarter profits totaled $307 million.

Philo's Celine Expands Rapidly

Image: AP

News comes today via WWD that Phoebe Philo's short time at Celine is already having a great effect on the brand.  The brand which in years past was struggling, and at a point was almost sold by LVMH is now thriving. Celine last season was only carried in its boutiques and at Nordstrom, for spring its expanding to Barneys, Saks, Bergdorf Goodman and Neiman Marcus amongst others. Although the spring collection was not the first offering from Philo for Celine, the cruise collection she did prior to spring has already had certain pieces sell out.

Celine Spring Summer 2010

NY Mag

One of the best collections for spring came from Celine, of course the credit has to be given to Phoebe Philo for giving the brand a breath of fresh air.  Its super minimal but with such exquisite detailing and clean lines that incorporative such luxurious materials(mostly leather).  If any woman wants to invest in classics for spring I say go the Celine route.

AlexWang Trunk Show @ Barneys

It was a fun weekend, got to check out the Spring Summer10 Alexander Wang collection at Barneys New York in Chicago.  He talked about the collection and the upcoming mens line which will launch in January, super humble person gave me advice on my career. Can't wait to shop the mens collection.  Wish I had taken pictures of the collection, but the SAs were kinda intimidating, the shoes were that much more amazing in person. By the way don't mind how terrible I look. He also took pictures with my sister and friend.

Things you need: Leopard! Leopard! Leopard!

                                                                      Isabel Marant FW09

                                                                       Yves Saint Laurent

Without a doubt you've seen the leopard trend being thrown your way by glossy magazines or various retailers. So believe it! the print isn't something that demands to be dressed up it can be worn casually, throw on a pair of jeans and a simple t shirt.  If you'd rather show a hint of leopard throw a scarf on.  The great thing about the trend is that its not really a trend its more of a classic item you keep and wear over and over. Go with your budget, from Zara to Yves Saint Laurent you'll be able to find something you like.

opposites

I love the use of color in the editorial from whowhatwear.com. Essentialy it's a simple outfit jeans, oxfords, button down.  For many however it can be daunting even at this time of the year to pile on the layers of clothes and end up looking that chic. It's really about mixing neutral colors and basics and using color in the accessories to create a vibrant look for this time of the year when everything is so dark.  On the other hand a monochromatic outfit can have a great effect also.  The first look is all black, yet each piece has unique details, from the skirt to the season's strong shoulders.  These are two great examples of how color or no color can look great.

This is the first post of hopefully many to come. First and foremost My name is Victor and I'm currently attending Columbia College Chicago studying Arts Entertainment and Media Management with a focus in Fashion Retail Management.... yes its a mouthful. After being an avid reader of various blogs for the past few years I decided to take up the task of making my own. So what is is my blog all about you ask? Well I would like to treat it as a sort of portfolio of inspiration. Inspiration filed with fashion that inspires me and hopefully will inspire others. Enjoy!
